About Jind District (Haryana)
Historically, Jind is one of the oldest districts of Harayana. The district got its name from its headquarters town, Jhind which is named after, Jaintapuri. It is believed to be found during the time of Mahabharata. According to a legend, the Pandavas constructed a temple in the honour of Jainti Devi (the goddess of victory), then started to offer prayers there for their success and finally launched the battle with the Kauravas. Gradually, a town emerged around the temple with the name Jaintapuri (Abode of Jainti Devi) which with the passage of time came to be known as Jind. It is one of the oldest districts of Haryana. As per the history of the district, it was established by Raja Gajpat Singh in 1776. A fort was also built by him in this place in the year 1775. After India got its independence, Jind became a part of the Indian Territory. In the year 1948 it became a part of the Sangrur district. After sometime in 1966, Jind was emerged as a separate district in the map of Haryana district. In 1967, it was bifurcated into two tehsils namely Jind and Safidon.
Rajinder Goel is also a former cricketer. He has made record of maximum wickets in Ranji Trophy. He is a left arm spinner who had played for Patiala, Southern Punjab, Delhi and Haryana. Suman Kundu is an Indian wrestler. She won a bronze medal in women's wrestling in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Geographically, the district has a total 2,702 sq. km. area and occupies the ranks 4th in State and 428th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 29°31'N latitude, 76°31'E longitude and 239 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 0.83% forest area of total geographical area. The climate of the district remains extremely hot in the summers and fairly cold in the winters. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 687.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 sub-districts, 6 towns and 306 villages. Hindi is its official language. In the state of Haryana with an allotted district code of 77th district of Jind came into existence on 1st November, 1966. Its district headquarters is located at Jind which is situated at a distance of 182 kms from the State Capital.
Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 2,44,582 households with a total of 13,34,152 comprising 7,13,006 males are and 6,21,146 are females and ranks 7th in the state and 364th in India. The density of population of the district is 494 persons per sq. km. The sex ratio is pegged at 871 females per 1000 males while the child ratio stands at 838 females per 1000 males. The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 2,82,351 including 1,50,940 are males and 1,31,411 are females. As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region is Hindu with 95.69%. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district is Hindi with 96.97%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 20,568 out of which 10,810 were males and 9,758 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 9,458 out of which 5,962 were males and 3,495 were females. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 12.13% including 11.01% were males and 13.44% were females.
Economically, agriculture is the prime source of income of the district. The first modern public dairy plant set up was set up in Jind. Units related to the manufacturing of cycles, clinical Laboratory thermometers and water pipefitting are also available here. There are also several small scale industries of manufacturing of paper board, sugar and khan sari, leather goods and woolen blankets. Agro based industries such as cotton ginning and rice shelling industries also have existence here. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,69,722 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 2,97,055 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 3,43,308 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 2,73,234 lakh at Constant prices during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during the period 2011-12 was Rs. 76,292 lakh at Current Price during the period 2004-2005.
Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate is 71.44% comprising 80.81% are males and 60.76% are females. The total literate population of the district is 8,32,758 persons including 5,02,049 are males and 3,30,709 are females. The district has several educational institutes including schools and colleges. Indus Public School is a non-profit day-boarding school. It is situated at Vijay Nagar in the Jind district. It was founded by a not able industrialist and philanthropist named Chaudhary Sri Mitter Sen Sindhu in the year 2002. It runs under Sindhu Education Foundation. Several educational trusts and institutes are associated to it. Jai Surya is also a famous school of Jind. There are six most reputed colleges in the district namely Govt College (Jind), Chotu Ram Krishna College (Jind), Hindu Kanya Maha Vidhalaya (Jind), Sanatan Dharma Mahila Mahavidhyalaya (Narvana), Kamla Memorial Government College (Narvana) and Government College (Safdon). The district also has several technical institutes.
Some of the key political personalities are part of the district. Surender Singh Barwala represented the Hisar constituency in the Parliament in 12th and 13th Lok Sabha. In 1987, he became the member of Vidhan Sabha from Barwala.
The district has numerous famous historical and religious tourist places. These places are Ancient Fort at Safidon, Bodh Stupa, Dhamtan Sahib, Fort of Jind, Hansdehar, Narwana, Pindara, Qilla Jafargarh, Ramrai. In the year 2020-2021, there were total 10,097 domestic tourists who visited the above places. This fort at Safidon was constructed in the 18th century AD by the ancestors of Phulkian family. It had been used as military cantonment of the state. The Bodh Stupa shows the existence of Buddhism in the area. The Chinese traveler Yuan Chwang also had written about this Bodh stupa at Chaneti. Dhamtan Sahib is a religious tourist place. It is believed that ashram of Rishi Valmiki was situated here. Ashvamedha Yagya was also organized by Lord Rama here. Manji Sahib Gurudwara is also located here which is dedicated to ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. Hansdehar is a religious place since in this place pinds were offered by Pandavas to their ancestors. Hansdehar is also famous for Shiva temple and Bindusar 'tirtha'.
